Every year schools conduct a battery of tests to gauge the academic progress of our students. These SAT ‘s (Stanford Achievement Tests) help our staff discern individual strengths and weaknesses in the core areas of education that are essential to a student’s academic development. When the tests are completed, sales scored, canada ranked, and returned they often bring either joy or disappointment to parents. Joy is associated with above grade level performance, and disappointment with below grade level work.
By comparison, Paul uses I Corinthians 13 (Scripture I Cor 13:4-7) as a sort of spiritual SAT for his young Corinthian believers. In a sense it was his evaluative instrument to measure how they scored in God’s school of love. Today we can use this same Scriptural measurement in similar ways with our children.
In Paul’s account, a spiritual score of zero could only be attained if there was an absence of God’s presence in a believer’s loving relationships to Him and others. This seems impossible since these young Corinthian believers, like all of us today, received a permanent filling of God’s own Spirit through belief and repentance (John 15:26-27, Acts 2:38). The filling of the Spirit served as a God promised presence and power in fulfilling the call to love. A spiritual score of zero meant that a believer (child or adult) would have had to say “no” to every God inspired leading. Is that possible? Paul stated it was in the earlier part of his letter to the Corinthians. (I Corinthians 3:13-17).
Anger and jealousy that is out of control which is opposite of I Corinthians 13 that says “love does not brag, is not Jealous, is not provoked, is not long suffered”, for example, could dominate a child’s life to such an extent that his/her salvation could be highly questioned. But according to Paul, it might simply mean an incredibly below grade level “love” SAT score. The young Corinthians scored low because they were arguing profusely about each other’s roles and gifts, which is a sign that love is not functioning. ( I Cor

A good tool to use in achieving the “love” score God wants for you and your children is a periodic spiritual SAT evaluation of where your entire family scores in this regard. Take the area of anger (love does not take into account), how does each member in your family respond when offended by others?
Teachable Moments
Pick a devotional time for your family and read aloud I Corinthians 13. List all the attributes of love in this chapter. Then locate an old report card and reproduce it for each member in your family. But as you do, replace the report card subject areas with the parts of love as shown in this great chapter on love. For example math becomes “Kindness”, or social studies becomes “Does not take into account when wrong suffered.” Then have each family members fill out a grade on each for themselves. Finally discuss their self evaluations amongst your whole family, making suggestions where improvement was indicated.

I Corinthians 12: 25 “…so that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another.”
John 15:26-27 “When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about me, and you will testify also, because you have been with me from the beginning.”
Acts 2:38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
I Corinthians 3: 11-16 For no man can lay a foundation other than the one, which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each man’s work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man’s work. If any man’s work, which he has built on, it, remains, he will receive a reward. If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.
