In our last teaching we discussed the significance of God’s covenants (Abrahamic Covenant, usa try Old Covenant, canada hospital New Covenant) with His people. This is important because there are some great parenting principles to be learned and applied from each covenant (Matthew 5:17-19). These God initiated arrangements were right for each generation of believers, buy and each covenant built upon the foundation of the other. All the covenants had boundaries and freedoms (Matt

. 5:21, Eph. 2:8-9, Exo. 13:9, Ps. 84:11). God placed laws and boundaries around his believers in the Old Covenant because they did not have the maturity to find faith without them. The Law became the tutor to direct them to Christ who would be realized in the New Covenant (Galatians 3:24). During the development of their faith, obedience to the law and worship at the Temple-Tabernacle was critical. It was at the Temple-Tabernacle they learned about God, lived out their repentance, and brought Gentiles to salvation.
In response, parents and teachers of young children today must surround them with strong boundaries, like the Old Covenant, and provide them with a secure environment, like the Temple-Tabernacle, where they can learn about God and develop their faith.
As time passed and as God’s people grew in their knowledge and experience of God, the New Covenant replaced the Old Covenant through Christ (I Cor. 11:25). The New Covenant did not do away with boundaries and laws, but it gave its people a resurrected Christ and an indwelling Holy Spirit as a means to carry them out (Gal. 2:20, John 14:26). When the Holy Spirit enters a child’s life he is set on a journey that will send him/her to all nations as God’s Temple-Tabernacle ( I Cor. 3:16). Your son or daughter will be able to teach others about God and call them to worship. They will be like graduating high school seniors, ready to make their mark on the world, no longer dependent on a classroom, but a classroom unto themselves.
In the course of child rearing, you should use both the Old and New Covenant principles in your parenting. But in your application, never forget that you are parents of the New Covenant and your greatest joy will be to raise New Covenant children.
Teachable Moment
In your teachable moment, make an appointment with one of your children’s previous teachers. Tell the teacher that you would like to come back for a visit after school one day, that you have a teaching purpose in mind. If you have 4thgraders for example, visit their old 2nd grade room. Locate with your children a bulletin board that shows the months of the year (or something similar). See if your children know the months of the year. Hopefully, they will look at you with some lessened respect and say, “Of course we know the months of the year, do you think we are still 2nd graders?” Give them some relief, and tell them you only asked them this question to make a point about the way God created His covenants. In case your children do not know what the word covenant means, explain that God’s covenants were the agreements or contracts he gave His people by which to live.
Make clear to your children that the Old Covenant was great during its time because it gave God’s people so many good laws and boundaries. Also that its purpose, just like all the covenants, was to build faith (Matthew 23:23). Tell them that the New Covenant, though, is an even better covenant, it is their contract with God. It came with Christ and continues today. God wants them to make His mark on society, He wants them to be His ambassadors (2 Cor. 5:20), and He has given them everything to accomplish this.
God’s Word
Matthew 5: 17 “Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. 18 “For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 “Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:21 “You have heard that the ancients were told, ‘You shall not commit murder’ and ‘Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.’ 22 “But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, ‘You good-for-nothing,’ shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell

Matthew 23:23 “….For you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.”
2 Cor. 5: 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.
